1. Academic Regulations

1.1 Admission

   • Admission to each program will be based on the criteria approved by the Academic Council and in line with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF).

   • Students must provide accurate documentation; misrepresentation may lead to cancellation of admission.

1.2 Attendance

   • Students are required to maintain at least 80% attendance in lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions to be eligible for examinations.

   • Exceptions may be granted by the Dean/Head of Department on medical or compassionate grounds.

1.3 Program Duration

   • The minimum and maximum duration of study shall be as per program specifications approved by the Academic Council and SLQF guidelines.

1.4 Code of Conduct

   • Students are expected to maintain discipline, respect faculty and peers, and uphold academic integrity.

   • Any form of harassment, discrimination, or disruptive behavior is strictly prohibited.

2. Examination Policy

2.1 Eligibility

   • A student must satisfy attendance requirements and complete all coursework, assignments, and practical work before sitting examinations.

   • Examination registration must be completed within the deadlines announced by the Registrar’s Office

2.2 Examination Conduct

   • Students must carry a valid student ID card.

   • Use of unauthorized materials, devices, or communication during exams is prohibited.

   • Any malpractice will result in disciplinary action, including cancellation of the exam or suspension.

2.3 Assessment Modes

   • Continuous Assessment (40–50%): quizzes, assignments, presentations, practical work.

   • Final Examination (50–60%): written exams, practical, or project evaluations.

   • The balance between continuous and final assessment will depend on the program/course structure.

2.4 Re-sit and Repeat

   • Students failing a course may be allowed to re-sit examinations, subject to regulations.

   • If a student fails after re-siting opportunities, they must repeat the course with the next cohort.

3. Grading System

3.1 Letter Grade and GPA Conversion

3.2 GPA Calculation

  • GPA = Σ (Credit Hours × Grade Point) ÷ Σ Credit Hours
  • A minimum cumulative GPA (e.g., 2.0) is required for graduation, subject to program regulations.

3.3 Classification of Awards

  • First Class: GPA ≥ 3.70
  • Second Class (Upper Division): GPA 3.30 – 3.69
  • Second Class (Lower Division): GPA 3.00 – 3.29
  • Pass: GPA 2.00 – 2.99

4. Plagiarism and Academic Integrity Policy

4.1 Definition

Plagiarism is the presentation of another person’s work, ideas, or expressions as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Copying from published or unpublished sources without citation.
  • Using AI-generated or internet-sourced material without disclosure.
  • Submitting work previously submitted by oneself (self-plagiarism) without permission.

4.2 Acceptable Use of Sources

  • All sources (books, journals, websites, AI tools) must be acknowledged using the prescribed citation style (e.g., APA/Harvard).
  • Direct quotations must be placed within quotation marks and referenced.

4.3 Detection and Penalties

  • Plagiarism will be detected through software and manual review.
  • Penalties may include:

1. First Offense (minor, >20% plagiarism): Warning + resubmission with penalties.

2. Second Offense: : Zero marks for the assignment/exam + notation on record.

3. Severe Cases (&40% or deliberate misconduct): Suspension or dismissal from the Institute..

4.4 Promoting Integrity

  • Students will receive orientation on academic writing, referencing, and the use of sources.
  • Faculty must model ethical research and guide students in responsible scholarship.
